COURSE DESCRIPTION
2018-01-04

Science course uses the American textbook Science Explorerwhich employs textpictures and hands-on activities to cultivate students' research skills. This science course leads students to understand the essential concepts and theory while providing strong support of facts to students.

LIFE SCIENCE

Seventh Grade Life Science is the study of living things or organisms. Each branch of life science focuses on a different type of organism and introduces the Middle School student to Lab science. Textbooks, audiovisual materials and fieldwork utilizing local resources are used to reinforce a hands-on approach. Active participation and cooperative learning are encouraged.

CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS

Conceptual Physics is a qualitative study of the central concepts of physics with emphasis on mental imagery that relates to things and events that are familiar in the everyday environment. The course is a base from which to view nature more perceptively and a springboard to greater understanding of physics. The course does not rely heavily on computation. Topics covered include: classical mechanics, relativity, energy, matter and waves, light and quantum physics. In emphasizing conceptualization before computation, it stimulates higher-level cognitive skills. The laboratory experience is a key part of the three-stage learning cycle followed through each chapter: exploration, concept development and application. This course is open to ninth graders.

ENGLISH

English provides a review of grammar, capitalization and punctuation on an as needed basis.  It also provides the students with an arena for open communication to reach within and beyond themselves to make a better world. Students write extensively. Paragraph structure and essay development are stressed. Students read and respond critically to a variety of literary forms including novels, short stories and drama. They develop their ability to take notes and to discuss a work of literature orally. Critical and inferential reading skills are central to the curriculum. Students synthesize information covered in class and are required to apply it to their writing. Students read The Crucible, Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes; To Kill A Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies.

GEOGRAPHY

Geography is the study of physical and human characteristics and how they impact the relationship between Earth and the people on it. It is essential that students develop the skills that will enable them to observe patterns, associations, and spatial order. Many of the capabilities that students need to develop geographic skills are termed critical thinking skills. These involve inferring, analyzing, judging, hypothesizing, generalizing, predicting and decision-making. These have applications to all levels of geographic inquiry in which students can build competencies in applying geographic skills to geographic inquiry. Culture and experience shape belief systems, which in turn influence people’s perceptions of places and regions throughout their lives. It is essential that students appreciate the diverse values of others in a multicultural world and to engage in accurate and sensitive analysis of people, places, and environments.

3D ART

This is an introductory 3D foundation art course for Middle School students. The class will be structured on both the visual elements and fundamental principles of design and composition. Students participate in "hands on" lessons, using a variety of materials and techniques to allow the students to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. A variety of three-dimensional design problems will be addressed and various mediums will be explored including wood and other natural media as well as wire and paper. While students are encouraged to develop their proficiency in various artistic techniques, the main emphasis is on personal growth and effort.
